Riceboy Sleeps - EMI, 2009

Known primarily for his haunting falsetto and other-worldly presence as the singer in Sigur Rós, Jon thor (Jónsi) Birgisson has - together with his partner Alex Somers - been exhibiting artwork and staging exhibitions under the name Riceboy Sleeps for two or three years now. A couple of months back the early fruits of the musical side of this collaboration surfaced in physical form for the first time, with the track ‘Happiness’, on the exemplary ‘Dark was the night’ red hot compilation. ‘Riceboy Sleeps’ is human in a profound and verging-on spiritual way. It says nothing, literally, and yet living through its 68-minutes you emerge feeling much has been revealed. Its slowly evolving abstract landscapes are both edifying and life-affirming. The record works as a whole, and exists in a contemplative dream-state, unconstrained and mesmeric, seemingly outside time.

Shadows on a River - Shadows on a River, Undertow Music Collective, 2009

"Meshing experimental psychedelica (complete with bells, keys, tamborines, etc) with low-key choruses and warm vocals, Shadows on a River stir the body’s insides to ease. Comfort, gratification, pleasure – such adjectives come to mind. While I’m not really one to blow steam all that often, I expect this Chicago based band to make it to the top of the indie world in no time with more efforts like their self-titled gem. You’ll be doing yourself a disservice if you don’t listen." -From www.knoxroad.

Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest, Warp, 2009

Already a front-runner for 2009's most gushed-over art-rock record, the third disc from this Brooklyn quartet has a sound that is completely its own: an opulent, intimate rumble built on churning acoustic riffs, haunted croons and precise string parts. Tracks like "All We Ask" and "Fine for Now," where singer Daniel Rossen murmurs "We're all faltering" over a languid, jazzy shuffle, are daydreams tinged with disquiet. Then there's the focused standout "Two Weeks," an uptempo tune built on gorgeous choral harmonies that sounds like a teenage symphony to God, as conceived by Radiohead-loving postgrads. Thomas Feiner & Anywhen - The Opiates (Revised), Samadhisound, 2008

"The dark, brooding, romantic nature of the material and, in particular, the emotional gravity of Thomas' voice, came as something of a surprise to me as it was quite out of keeping with my listening habits of the time but I couldn't help but be drawn into its widescreen, colour-drained, soundscapes." Sweet Billy Pilgrim - Twice Born Men, Samadhisound, 2009

Staggering in like three lost souls sheltering from the raging storm, Sweet Billy Pilgrim create tiny symphonies in a vacuum. Twice Born Men – a loose concept about love – (''but not in a Barry White way'' Elsenburg has quipped) is a rewarding, if occasionally challenging listen. Signed to David Sylvian's Samadhisound label, the delightful sleeve contains as much detail about the painting on it (by Tacita Dean) as the recording itself. If that floats your boat, you will love this record. (Daryl Easlea, BBC Music)
